Head lighting designer and head electrician for FYP's spring production of "Legally Blonde." Responsibilities included creating instrument rental orders, plots, wiring schematics, and coordinating lighting team during tech and show week. Also upgraded show control system to ETC Gadget II for EOS software control.
PROCESS
My process began with an in-depth script analysis and listen through of the score. I built a spreadsheet of cue moments that I wanted to flesh out and explore further down the design pipeline. This spreadsheet was iterated and iterated while live blocking info was inserted from rehearsals and eventually finalized into a final cue list that could be ported into EOS offline software to prep for tech
I concurrently developed the plot for the show, predominantly borrowing the same layout as last semester. The reworked plot features 8 acting areas covered by 10 front lights, 5 LED top lights, 2 LED side lights, and - new this year - are cheap LED floor pars, LED tape, and PAR64s for cross light.
The new LED tape would line the interior of a center stage door frame to highlight entrances, paired with the two floor pars shining through the doors, which doubled as rafter fills when the doors were closed.
The four black fixtures center-plot were existing, already hung LED fresnels used by other CIOs that I intended to borrow for the show, but unfortunately they could not run simultaneously with the Color Source Pars on without having serious issues.
Other paperwork I created included a wattage calculator to make sure we stayed under the building's limited wattage budget, rental and equipment purchase forms, and a color swatch look up table. My team created the finished spot cue sheet which our operators used night to night.
